The Diving Bell and the Butterfly by Jean-Dominique Bauby. Wed 16th July, 1 Chapel Avenue
Most of the people attending had read all of the book as it was (unsurprisingly) short.
As with many of our choices, some would never have picked it out for themselves to read but were glad they had read it.
Comments from the group on the book: “sobering,” “harrowing,” “he was a bit of a dick,” “bland style. Suffered due to it being a translation?”
The feature film of the book was highly recommended as it captures an atmosphere and extra dimensions to the story that do not come across in the book.
In summary, there was much sympathy for his situation and it was an amazing achievement to write the book but there was disappointment that it was not an outstanding work of literature. Watch the film.
