Never Let Me Go

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro

Many thanks to those who turned up for a far ranging discussion. I met Robert a few days before the group who said he thought there was a good female voice, something often lacking in novels. It was commented on by the group that the book could have been written by a woman.  Peter sent an email as he was housebound due to relatives. He also enjoyed it and finished it. Many found the book “claustrophobic” and “incredibly, overwhelmingly, sad.” We discussed how the characters in the book were slaves and how we would expect them to rebel more than they did. This led to a discussion of Brainwashing of all kinds from wartime propaganda to organised religion. If they had rebelled and become free this would have been the Hollywood ending but completely have changed the nature of the book.
