We had a good turn out at Clare's last night and a lively meeting with lots of differing opinions, this seemed to be a book you either love or you hate. Many relished the portrayal of the damp claustrophobic atmosphere, which reflected the social constraints of the time as much as restrictions brought about by religious adherence. And for others, these were the very things that drove them to distraction, dating the book beyond endurance and causing them to leave it unfinished. As usual, the wine flowed and the conversation roamed over many subjects. A big thank you Clare for hosting this, your last meeting. We will miss you - and if you ever feel like coming along to any future meetings you will be very welcome.
